Escape the Ordinary...

January 30, 2015

Good morning and happy Friday! Today I find myself surrounded by sun filling the windows in my office and listening to birds welcome in the warm weather. Before I start working on anything that involves a screen I always take a minute to reflect in my journal about the week that has past, and the things that need to get done next. (Yes, I live by lists haha).

Yesterday I received an inspiring message from someone who explained how my blog has pushed them to follow their passions and to really explore the potential of their own creativity. I was overjoyed to think that in some small way I had a positive impact in someone's life, and no matter how small that is the one thing that keeps my pushing my own boundaries. So today my journal and sketchpad is filled with new ideas and thoughts as I move onto a new week ahead.

On a side note, my mug is filled with a new raspberry smoothie I invented. I love this mug, I had picked it up in Tokyo a few years ago and haven't found a better replacement for it yet. It's the perfect size and has a lid to keep things hot or cold and prevent spills. Around the rim reads a cute story about the picture "The rabbit is trying to trick the cat into sitting on her broken chair". Naughty rabbit!

Raspberry Smoothie Recipe is Called: Escape the Ordinary (inspired by my journal ;)

Ingredients (mostly organic):

2 cups baby spinach leaves
1/2 cup microgreens
2  cup frozen raspberries
1/2 cup plain yogurt
Coconut water to blend

How will you escape the ordinary today? Maybe it's just with a new smoothie recipe (or maybe it's something more!) If you need a pick-me-up in the journal department, here are a few of my favorites from Kate Spade:

I hope you'll let me know how it goes here in the comments or on the socialsphere. Have a great weekend everyone.

If You're Going to Have a Burger...

Then make it a good one! And sustainable. There is a burger gem located in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco if you can make it out there. A place that is worth putting your phone down for, just to enjoy the pleasures of a taking your time over a tech-free meal and simple conversation.

The Beachside Coffee Bar and Kitchen serves up amazing coffee, but also surprisingly good grass-fed beef hamburgers on home-made rolls.

A Final Glimpse at Winter

January 24, 2015

I found myself in Colorado these past few days, visiting friends and family and enjoying the crisp air of winter and little bit of snow that California always misses.

Besides Snow Geese, Colorodo's high mountain air also has some of the coldest, windiest weather I've ever experienced. Weather like this requires extra-thick tights, wool dresses and knee-high boots underneath warm coats. I dressed up this dark look with a light colored statement necklace and a sparkly black belt.

After layering up I proceeded to goof off, enjoying the wind as much as possible on a walk into town.

Looking for that Perfect New Accessory for Spring? How About a Microdrone

January 23, 2015

Looking for that perfect spring accessory? How about a robot? Start practicing your flight patterns now with the latest and greatest in these little robotic friends, and you'll be ready to show it off just in time for the beautiful spring weather.

This image gives you an idea about how cute and tiny the micro-drones can be. You can build one out from a kit or just get one that is already pieced together and ready to fly. This one, from Hubsan - comes with a little FPV camera on the front, so you can see what the drone sees on a little screen. You can also record video. (As long as you are not prone to motion sickness ;)

The first step when taking your drone out for a flight is pairing it with the transmitter, i.e. controller.

You'll also need a launching pad. I used this green electric box, which was the perfect height...

...and you'll need the perfect outfit of course. Layers are a must for flying, and I've found myself wearing this Drippy Wool jacket from Free People just about everywhere (PS its on sale now!) Sweatshirt by Madewell, mini skirt by Theory

Then take-off! Watch out for the blades (and the trees) but otherwise it's so much fun to fly these little guys around. This is it spinning -

My Top 3 Apps for Fashion Inspiration

January 21, 2015

Our screens get more distracting and crowded everyday. With such limited space on the home screen, I am definitely picky about what apps make the cut…  Read more about my go-to staples on Socially Shoppable today! Click Here to Read.

How Effective are Wearable Activity Trackers? Part 2

January 18, 2015

It's been almost a week now that I've been testing out the latest Fitbit Charge. I've been exercising, walking, and sleeping while wearing it, to see if it could improve my life in any way or if I could be fine without it. Folks, the verdict is in.

I'm also wearing my evening diy LED barrette that works great for night visibility on the track

How Effective are Wearable Activity Trackers? Part 1

January 12, 2015

I'm what you might call a tech-enthusiast, trying out just about any cool gadget that surfaces on the front page of TechCrunch or Engadget. I've also tried my fill of activity trackers. Fitbit, Jawbone, Sony... however all of the first releases had been utterly disappointing and end up laying around the house - it's so sad. As CES has come to a close last week, I still wasn't blown away by anything new, but overwhelmed by the amount of activity trackers that were showcased and am racking my brain to figure out why! It must be because they sell, or have the potential to sell. So who keeps purchasing these useless, glorified pedometers?

I decided to give them another try. Fitbit seems like the most popular option right now and they do have some new interesting bands on the website. First I'm going to try out the Fitbit Charge, to see if it helps increase my fitness or replaces a personal trainer in the areas of motivation. I highly doubt either of these things but I'm still going to test every feature and use it to the max.

It displays steps ...

Displays the time ...

Brain Food on the Go

January 11, 2015

Mornings are a time for rushing around and prioritizing that day's outfit over eating a healthy breakfast. I'm totally guilty of grabbing that occasional donut when I stop for coffee in the morning. This recipe is one that I tried both in the morning, and even once making the night before. It kept so well in the fridge overnight and was easy to just pour into a to-go cup on my way out the door. I call this one Rainbow Berry Immunity (yes I'm going for the cheesiest names possible) because the ingredients are so colorful, and it has extra immunity boosters in it.

Name: Rainbow Berry Immunity

Ingredients (mostly organic):

2 cups baby spinach leaves
1 cup frozen blueberries
10 frozen strawberries
1 sliced banana
A few mint leaves (I put extra in - makes it taste so fresh!)

Then based on the recent gift from my health-nut and nutritionist cousins, put in a few drops of Host Defense Immune Support (you can find it here).

Let me know if you have any great recipes to share, I'd love to try them out. Stay healthy this winter season, who is ready for spring!?

Midnight Matinee

January 8, 2015

Have you ever been to the theater to see a late night show? Those are the shows played at theaters (often independently owned) late at night, showcasing epic films without computer generated special effects that have been forgotten. I wore an outfit that I think best represents this unique experience, and to show off my dark new hairstyle.

Navy blue collared shirt and bomber jacket with black skirt and black boots. In case you were wondering if you can pull it off, I think navy and blue will timelessly go together in any order.

These are taken with a wide-angle lens. I think the perspective is really interesting...almost like peering into a security camera.

5 Trends for Wearable-Technology to Look Forward to in 2015

January 7, 2015

CES has arrived once again, and I am waiting to be impressed by the next wearable gadgetry and fashion-tech from innovators around the world.

Read more about the 5 trends that I can't wait to see more of this year here on Socially Shoppable today! Click Here to Read.

Also, let me know via my social channels if you'd like to get your hands on one of these not-so-fashionable-obviously-techy friendship necklaces I'm making, in support of not-so-chic wearables everywhere. ;) With the push of that tiny button, a red light starts to blink at a rate of your choosing. Yes, it is both as functional and fashionable as it sounds.

What to listen to in 2015

January 6, 2015

(Note: this post has sound)

"Every human being needs to listen consciously in order to live fully."

Headphones are really the original wearable tech. Everyone loves the portability and freedom of taking sound and music with us. It shuts the world out and brings us back into ourselves for a moment in time.

What are you listening to right now? Music, podcasts, or other sound-bytes? I recently listened to Julian Treasure, Master of Sound, speak on the importance on listening  consciously in order to connect in space, time, and to each other.

It was a great talk, reminding me to practice listening more to the surrounding world. The mini-rebel inside me said, I love to listen to music through my headphones! In my mind, it is polite, and even acts as a little fashionable accessory - note this fantastic matte pop of pink against a dark peacoat.

These headphones fold up and fit right into my little handbag so they are even more portable.

New Year's Resolution #1: More Green Veggies!

January 3, 2015

This year, as my first real attempt to improve my culinary skills, I've added another category to the blog where, on occasion, I'll be experimenting with some healthy recipes or reviewing local cuisine.

In an attempt to get those neurons firing a bit faster, my first New Year's resolution is to find interesting ways to incorporate more leafy greens into my diet. My first cooking ambition is to make a variety of healthy smoothies, (and give them totally silly names).

This is the first one I tried, and after some minor trial and error it tasted great and turned out to be a refreshing snack that left me feeling energized and completely satisfied.

Winter Green Elixer (a.k.a. salad in a glass)

A New Year's Eve Party in True San Francisco Fashion: BYOT (Bring Your Own Tech)

January 1, 2015

A house party with the only lights coming from strings and a toasty backyard fire pit was the perfect place to try out my DIY LED sequence sequins dress, (as mentioned in this earlier post) on New Year's Eve. It was really fun to add a little extra sparkle onto party dress, and the string of lights replaced the necklace I'd usually wear. Could lights become the next trend in jewelry?

Here's hoping, click for a quick peek of the rest of the party.
